Norovirus outbreak reported in Connecticut as spring approaches
(WFSB) – Norovirus outbreaks have been reported in Connecticut since early 2024. Although no individual cases have been reported in the state, foodborne illness and institutional outbreaks have been reported by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH).
Since Jan. 1, there have been 7 confirmed cases of the virus out of 17 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks, according to a report sent to DPH. Of these, 16 were likely due to human-to-human transmission, and one was food poisoning.
“Most norovirus outbreaks occur between November and April. If a new strain emerges, the number of cases could increase by 50 percent,” said DPH Secretary Dr. Manisha Jutani. “Best practices to protect yourself and prevent the spread of norovirus include washing your hands frequently, rinsing fruits and vegetables, and thoroughly cooking shellfish. You should also avoid fever, nausea, and vomiting. If you have symptoms such as diarrhea, please stay home for two days after the symptoms subside.
Fourteen of the outbreaks occurred in long-term care facilities or assisted living facilities, two at schools and one at a restaurant. The virus primarily infects adults over 65 years of age, but there are more than 2.25 million outpatient visits each year, most of them young children.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), norovirus is a contagious virus that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. This virus is sometimes called the “stomach bug” or “stomach flu.”
