'Younger patients are more likely to have aggressive cancers': Changes in screening guidelines
MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — Women are now being asked to get mammograms sooner. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has lowered the recommended age for women to undergo mammography from 50 to 40.
- Dr. Erin Prince of Ascension Providence Breast Health Center said 11 percent of breast cancers detected occur in women in their 40s.
- Adrian Barry, a Central Texas resident, was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. Early detection allowed her to receive treatment.
- McLennan County CHNA found that 35% of respondents in McLennan County had a mammogram screening in the past year.

“She said it was caught early in the early stages, so that was really good news. I was diagnosed with stage 1 ductal cancer,” Adrian Barry said.
Adrienne Barry was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 after undergoing a routine mammogram at Baylor Scott & White Hospital.
“Thankfully, I haven't made much progress, but since I caught it early, I'm going to get a mammogram every year in my birthday month,” she said.
Barry is one of the lucky people who started breast cancer screening at age 40. This is the age at which the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force currently recommends that women undergo breast cancer screening. She was previously 50 years old.
“There are certain groups of women, younger patients are more likely to have more aggressive cancers, and there are also certain races, and black women often have more aggressive cancers,” Erin says.・Dr. Prince said.

At Ascension Providence Breast Health Center, mammography exams are fully covered if a woman has insurance. For uninsured women, there's the Pink Girlfriend Fund, which also fully covers mammograms if you qualify.
