How to relieve seasonal allergies
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Now that spring is in full bloom, many people are struggling with allergies, but that doesn't have to keep them from coming to the park.
“Right now, I have allergies, a runny nose, and I'm always coughing. But I love the park, so I always come,” Jamal Morales said.
Some people suffer worse than others.
“I'm walking around here trying to clear things up, but it's been really bad this year,” Lindsey said.
Dr. Jonathan Bayuk of the Allergy and Immunology Society of New England talked about the new wave of allergens to be aware of.
“People will start to see the cottonwoods start releasing some of their seeds. They're like little white things and you've seen them before. They're all over the place and they're releasing grass pollen. When you pick it up and it gets in your eye, it's like a little grass bomb,” Bayuk explained.
Bayuk described one way to reduce allergy symptoms beyond typical over-the-counter medications.
“You can take medications, but if the medications don't work or the problem still persists, allergy shots are a great option,” Bayuk says.
Allergy testing is exactly what Ralph Welliver did and now I no longer have allergy symptoms.
“I responded to 32 of the 36 requests, so they prepared a potion and gave it to me. I was shot for a while, but the symptoms subsided and after a few years it wasn't as bad, but… I went back to another regiment. That was in my late 20s, and I'm 75 now and in good health,” Welliver said.
Welliver encouraged people who suffer from severe allergies to try allergy shots.
“Yes, I think so, and I would recommend it to anyone,” Welliver added.
Bayuk also advised people to wash their hands after going out and avoid touching their faces to prevent any distress.
