Doctors raise awareness for World Lung Cancer Day
LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – August 1 marks World Lung Cancer Day, and doctors at Christus Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital are reminding the importance of early detection.
Hannah O'Gear lost her grandfather to lung cancer in 2010. He was misdiagnosed for about a year before it was discovered he had small cell lung cancer.
“It never occurred to them that he had lung cancer. They literally just thought he had pneumonia. If you get any number of diagnoses that make you feel even a little bit uneasy, ask questions, ask for a second opinion, request some kind of testing to see if it can be caught early so you don't have to go through some of those horrible treatments,” Dr. Ogea said.
Testing for lung cancer is relatively simple, requiring a CT scan of the chest and lungs, and some tools can now reach areas that were previously inaccessible or too risky to access for biopsies.
“We now have a minimally invasive robotic bronchoscopy that can be done through the mouth, that can actually diagnose what the nodules are, even small nodules, and we can rule them out or determine if they are cancerous,” said cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Daniel Beckles.
Currently, anyone between the ages of 50 and 80 should be screened for lung cancer if they are a former or current smoker. Although smokers are at higher risk of developing lung cancer, 15% of people who develop lung cancer have never smoked and have no risk factors for lung cancer.
“If you look at the survival rates, as the lung stage increases, the survival rate decreases. For example, for stage four cancer, the survival rate is less than 10 percent, but for stage one cancer, the survival rate is over 90 percent,” said pulmonologist Dr. Tashfeen Mahmood.
Getting screened for lung cancer is important because there are no early symptoms, so by the time symptoms appear it may already be too late.
“We are called to serve, but we see the devastation, the stress, the pain, the shortness of breath, and most of all, we see their families suffering as well. Our hope is to spread awareness, make a difference and stop people from being affected like this,” said Respiratory Therapist Rene Bearden.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
