Galveston County Health officials have issued a Vibrio warning to beachgoers after the number of cases increased.
GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Galveston health officials issued a warning to people heading to the beach.
The Galveston County Health Department (GCHD) said cases of Vibrio on the island are on the rise, with cases typically peaking around summer.
Vibrio is a well-known flesh-eating virus found in warm coastal waters around the world.
Health officials say the majority of cases involve severe wound infections, and symptoms include fever, low blood pressure, skin lesions and, in rare cases, loss of limbs.
It can also cause health problems due to vomiting and dehydration, which can be fatal in some cases.

The Galveston County Health Department is warning residents about a rare bacteria found in warm coastal waters after a man died after eating raw oysters.
“While Vibrio may be present in Galveston's waters, there is no need to panic. Use common sense, avoid raw seafood, practice good hygiene and stay informed to stay safe,” said Dr. Philip Kaiser with GCHD.
Officials added that serious infections caused by Vibrio are rare, but when they do occur, those infected typically have pre-existing health conditions or open wounds or wounds.
Beachgoers are advised to cover cuts and open wounds, avoid raw seafood and practice good hygiene.
If you suspect you have a Vibrio infection, it is best to see a doctor immediately.
