NL Health Services Medical Officer of Health Nazlie Ogunyemi said cases of the respiratory illness typically increase in the autumn and can spread quickly when children congregate in classrooms.

Ogunyemi said viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus and enterovirus are some of the most common illnesses this season.

To prevent these infections, she says the simple phrases “cover, clean, contain” can help.

“Cover your mouth when you cough, clean with hand sanitizer, wash your hands and contain. So, stay home if you are sick and if you have to go out, make sure you wear a mask,” Ogunyemi said.

“This will help prevent the transmission of viruses that can cause very serious illness, such as respiratory syncytial virus and bacterial infections.”

Some parents may be concerned about the spread of more serious illnesses, such as pneumonia or whooping cough, but medical officials say it's important to seek medical advice before jumping to any conclusions.

“A lot of people think they can tell the difference by the color of the mucus, for example, but green nasal discharge could be a bacterial infection, and it could also be a viral infection…. The only way to really know is to go to the doctor and get a swab test to find out which specific virus you have.”

Ogunyemi said whooping cough has been a concern this year, with eastern Newfoundland seeing an outbreak earlier this year and cases increasing in other parts of the country, including Labrador.

The early symptoms of whooping cough usually resemble those of a cold, with repeated bouts of severe coughing that eventually turns into a wheezing sound. Anyone with whooping cough symptoms, especially children, is treated with antibiotics and encouraged to stay at home. If untreated, the disease is contagious for about 21 days.

The decision to keep children home from school can be difficult, so Ogunyemi says it's important to watch for contagious symptoms. A good rule of thumb is to stay home for 24 hours after the fever has subsided.

Ogunyemi said with COVID-19 still spreading, another way to avoid getting sick in schools is to check the vaccination status of children and ensure they are up to date.
