Research shows that people who go to bed late have a higher risk of diabetes due to factors other than lifestyle habits

People who go to bed late, or so-called “night owls,” are about 50% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who go to bed early.

They also tend to have a high BMI (body mass index), a large waistline, and a lot of hidden body fat such as visceral fat and liver fat. Contributes to metabolic health issues.

The findings of the study have not yet been published but will be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Madrid, Spain.

The study, led by Dr Jeroen van der Velde of Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, looked at the relationship between sleep timing, body fat distribution and diabetes risk.

Previous research has suggested that people who stay up late are more likely to have unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking and an unhealthy diet, but this study shows that lifestyle habits alone cannot fully explain the increased risk of type 2 diabetes in night owls.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common non-communicable diseases in India. Over 100 million people in the country I am suffering from this disease.

It's a chronic condition in which the body doesn't properly use insulin (a hormone secreted by the pancreas), leading to high blood sugar levels. It's often associated with obesity, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet.

The study analyzed data from more than 5,000 individuals as part of the Netherlands Obesity Epidemiology Study. The average age of participants was 56 years old. Provided details about sleep habitsThis was used to categorize participants into early, mid, or late chronotype groups (natural sleep-wake patterns).

Chronotype groups categorize people based on their natural sleep-wake patterns and preferences, including:

Initial Chronotype: I like to get up early and go to bed early.
Intermediate Chronotype: Maintain a balanced sleep schedule – not too early and not too late.
Late Chronotype: I like to stay up late and get up late.

These groups reflect individual differences in body clocks and daily rhythms.

BMI, waist size and body fat levels were also measured, and MRI scans were used to assess visceral and liver fat in some participants.

Over 6.6 years of follow-up, 225 participants developed type 2 diabetes.

“We think there are other mechanisms at play,” says Dr van der Velde. “A likely explanation is that the circadian rhythms, or internal clocks, of people with late-onset dementia are out of sync with the work and social schedules that society follows. This could lead to misalignment of circadian rhythms, which in turn could lead to Causes metabolic disorders and ultimately type 2 diabetes

Even after controlling for factors like age, physical activity, and sleep quality, slower chronotypes were found to have a 46% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to intermediate chronotypes.

They also had higher BMIs, larger waistlines, and more visceral and liver fat.

Dr van der Velde recommends lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding late-night eating and considering time-restricted eating, as potential strategies to improve metabolic health in night owls.

Further research is underway to understand the impact of lifestyle timing on type 2 diabetes risk.
