Is light pollution a new risk factor for Alzheimer's?
A new study shows that outdoor light at night may be a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Light pollution has already been associated with an increased risk of several disorders and diseases. The researchers divided people into groups based on light intensity. In five groups, they found that light intensity correlated with Alzheimer's prevalence, even though some established disease factors were not. Although the cause is unknown, high light intensity at night was associated with a higher prevalence of Alzheimer's disease than any other risk factor examined in the study for people under 65, suggesting that younger people may be more sensitive to the effects of nighttime light exposure. Light exposure affects the body's natural sleep-wake pattern, called the circadian rhythm. Light exposure at night can disrupt a person's circadian rhythm, promoting inflammation and reducing resilience, which may make them more susceptible to disease. The study results are limited to a small portion of the population, and further testing is needed to better understand the relationship between outdoor light in the evening and Alzheimer's disease.
