ER visits often precede cancer diagnosis

Canadian researchers found that about one in three people newly diagnosed with cancer had at least one emergency room visit in the three months before diagnosis.
The physician-led team noted that many of the visits ultimately were due to cancer-related symptoms. Dr. Screw Grewalan emergency physician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
Unfortunately, many patients are first told they may have a malignant tumor while being treated in a busy emergency room.
“The emergency department is not an ideal environment to manage patients with suspected cancer,” Grewal says. “Emergency departments are routinely crowded and privacy is limited. Patients say receiving a suspected cancer diagnosis in this environment is distressing.”
His team announced its findings on Monday. Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Grewal and colleagues looked at data collected by the Institute of Clinical Evaluation Services (ICES) in Toronto. This data includes more than 650,000 patients diagnosed with cancer in Ontario between 2014 and 2021.
The researchers found that more than a third (35%) had visited an emergency department in the 90 days before receiving their cancer diagnosis.
Among this group of patients, researchers found that 64% had one emergency department visit, 23% had two visits, and 13% had three or more visits.
More than half (51%) of patients who visited the emergency department before being diagnosed with cancer ended up being hospitalized.

Patients with gastroesophageal cancer often presented to the emergency department related to gastrointestinal bleeding, dysphagia, and abdominal pain.
People diagnosed with a brain tumor were more likely to visit the emergency department for symptoms such as weakness, confusion, and seizures before being diagnosed.
The research team noted that the Canadian findings are consistent with those of similar studies conducted in the United Kingdom and United States.
