Dr Kate O'Brien, WHO's Director of Immunization, Vaccines and Biology, said global vaccine decisions were often influenced by potential return on investment rather than the needs of high-burden communities. said.
“This research leverages local data and expertise to target vaccines that can significantly reduce diseases impacting communities today and reduce health care costs,” she said.
WHO collaborated with international and regional experts to assess factors for vaccine development, including local disease burden, antimicrobial resistance risk, and socio-economic impacts.
By combining expert insights and data for each pathogen, we identified the top 10 priorities for each WHO region and combined them into a global list of 17 priority pathogens.
