More than 65 organizations call for comprehensive obesity care coverage in the workplace
recently Open Letter Sixty-eight organizations addressed to American employers have urged businesses to cover obesity care just like any other chronic illness.
The letter was led by the Alliance for Women's Health and Prevention and included participation from the Women's Health Research Association, the National Federation of Health Care Buyers, and several others. This is part of a campaign announced last year by the Alliance for Women's Health and Prevention (AWHP). Everyone covered itaims to improve coverage for obesity insurance.
The organization argued that comprehensive obesity compensation should include “a full range of evidence-based obesity care options,” including medical nutritional therapy, intensive behavioral therapy, surgery, and drugs.
The organization added that if obesity is not treated, the conditions would cost the employer about $425.5 billion a year.
“If obesity care coverage is not available, patients are left to seek less safe alternatives or seek treatment in full. … Covering obesity care could also help reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and reduce costs through a healthier workforce,” the letter states.

According to the letter, women, especially women of color, are particularly affected by obesity. Additionally, employers should oppose weight bias by educating employees about weight loss, using people, creating resource groups for employees, and providing accommodation to people who are obese.
