Status overview
EVD is a severe, often fatal disease in humans caused by infection with the Ebola virus. It infects people spreading into wildlife and human populations through direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, and through contaminated surfaces and materials. The average case fatality rate is approximately 50%, but can vary from 25 to 90% depending on the timeliness of incidence and treatment and control measurement. The number of cases is evolving rapidly. As of the September 14 reporting cycle, 30 confirmed cases have been reported, with 27 deaths, including four healthcare workers. There are 43 suspect cases in four districts, including Bulape, Mweka, Mushenge and Kanzala, and Tshikapa has been contacted to reflect on ongoing investigations and data integration. Operational constraints are important. Road access from Kinshasa can take up to three days, and the nearest quarantine unit has around 15 beds, which are well below current needs. Monitoring, contact tracking, safe and dignified burial (SDB) also needs to be scaled up quickly to interrupt the transmission chain. Currently, 2,000 doses of Elvevo vaccines are located in Kinshasa for contact and ring vaccinations of frontline workers.
