The last Ebola patient in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been discharged from a treatment center in Kasai province, the United Nations health agency said.

“The country's strong response, with support from WHO and partners, was critical to this outcome,” he added in a social media post.

The outbreak, the 16th to date in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was declared on September 4 after cases of Ebola in the Burape and Mweka regions of the country's southwestern Kasai province.
Since then, WHO has tallied 53 confirmed cases and 11 probable infections, with patients exhibiting typical Ebola symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding. 45 people died.
Health officials say remote Kasai province has proven difficult to reach, even if it has helped prevent the spread of the virus.
Still, for the first time in the region, WHO has deployed a response team “outside of a simulation exercise” and set up a 32-bed treatment center, the organization said. More than 35,000 people have been vaccinated in the Bulape region.
No new infections have been confirmed since September 25th.
Ebola was first identified in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Without treatment, up to 90 percent of cases result in death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The largest outbreak occurred in West Africa from 2014 to 2016, ultimately infecting 28,600 people and killing 11,325, and the disease spread to Europe and the United States.
The most recent outbreak in the DRC occurred in 2022 and involved only one person. recorded incident of the virus.
