Dr. Axel Lehia, a professor of microbiology in the University of Hawaii's Department of Tropical Medicine, said such mass euthanasia acts like a firebreak to stop the spread of diseases like wildfires.

“It's a similar situation, but of course we know that the birds in the aviary are living in very close quarters. This is just a standard practice that has to be done because these viruses spread so quickly,” Professor Lehrer said.

Avian influenza can also infect other commercial birds, including other livestock and pets, as migratory birds carrying the virus travel from space to space and spread the disease. “At this stage, these viruses are not adapted to replicate well in humans because they are of avian origin,” he said.

However, some humans became infected and some died. Some scientists fear that if there are enough mutations, the virus could be transmitted from person to person, but such transmission has not yet occurred. “We are developing new vaccines against these H5 viruses, and we are ramping up surveillance to ensure we can identify the mutations necessary for effective human-to-human transmission,” said Professor Scott Hensley, a microbiologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
