Atkinson out: England suffer third loss in Ashes quick game
England arrived in Australia with a four-strong pace cartel ready to shake up the hosts. They will end the series with only one of them left alive
Brydon Kearse officially becomes England's last active speedster after Gus Atkinson missed the Sydney Test with a hamstring injury.
Atkinson, who was injured on the second morning in Melbourne, was officially injured in the final Ashes series in Sydney on Monday, with scans confirming the injury to his left foot.
Atkinson was initially part of a four-strong pace cartel for the opening Test in Perth, believing he, Kearse, Mark Wood and Jofra Archer were all capable of fast bowling and could shake up Australia.
Wood lasted just one Test after requiring surgery on his left knee earlier this year, complaining of pain after the two-day defeat in Perth.
It was a particularly frustrating blow for England, given that Archer was bowling his best of the entire series in that match, picking up five wickets in the first innings after the third Test in Adelaide.
Atkinson, who was disqualified in the match against Adelaide and was recalled to replace Archer in the match against Melbourne, is now the third player to be disqualified.
His tour ended with six wickets at 47.33, with a brief highlight being the fourth-inning dismissals of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne in Brisbane.
This leaves Kearse as the only express quick still remaining from the group that arrived in Australia six weeks ago for a chance to win back Ashes.
Kearse achieved his best Test of the summer in England's victory in Melbourne, but was particularly inconsistent as the tourists lost the first three Tests and the series.
Seamer Matthew Potts is expected to replace Atkinson in Sydney, giving the 27-year-old his first Test in just over 12 months.
Fellow seamer Josh Tan is expected to join Kearse with the new ball following his heroics in Melbourne.
Ben Stokes, who is always reliable, and spin bowling all-rounder Will Jacks will also remain.
