Kingston-led study finds exercise after colon cancer treatment improves survival and reduces healthcare costs
A new study led by Kingston researchers has shown that a structured exercise program for people recovering from colon cancer can help them live longer and also reduce costs for the healthcare system.
The study was led by researchers at Kingston Health Sciences Center (KHSC), Queen’s University, and the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG). The findings were presented this week at a major international cancer conference and published in a leading medical journal.
Exercise as part of recovery
The study looked at people who had completed chemotherapy for colon cancer. Participants engaged in a structured exercise program over three years with the support of trained fitness professionals.
The study found that people who participated in an exercise program:
- Long-term survival outcomes were better
- cancer is less likely to come back,
- Reduced need for future cancer treatments
Health system cost reduction
The researchers also looked at the cost of providing this type of structured exercise program.
The total cost of the exercise program itself is approximately $3,000 per person over three years. This includes regular sessions with a trained exercise professional. Every two weeks for the first year and monthly for the next two years.
Compared to the high costs of many cancer treatments, which cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, this is a relatively low-cost initiative that can have a significant impact on patient care. In fact, studies have found that the program can actually save money overall, as fewer patients require further treatment after participating.
A simple approach that delivers big results
“This study shows that exercise is not only good for patients’ health, but can also reduce pressure on the health care system,” said Dr. Christopher Booth, a cancer expert at Kingston-based KHSC and a professor at Queen’s University. “There are very few that deliver both improved survivability and reduced costs.”
Researchers say the findings highlight the importance of making exercise part of standard cancer treatment, rather than just an optional treatment.

This research reflects the strong collaboration between KHSC, Queen’s University and CCTG, with Kingston playing a leading role in advancing cancer treatment research around the world.
“This is a great example of local research making a real difference to patients,” Dr. Booth said. “We now need to make programs like this available to people as part of the routine standard of care prescribed by their medical teams.”
For participants, the program also brought about meaningful changes in their daily lives.
Terry Swain Collins, a Kingston resident who participated in the study, said working with a trainer helped her develop long-lasting healthy habits. “This program has given me structure and support,” she said. “I found exercise to be simple, manageable, and really beneficial.”
