First positive West Nile virus mosquito sample found in Cumberland County
Samples were taken in Shippensburg, according to the county authorities.
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania — The Pennsylvania Environmental Conservation Agency announced Thursday that the Pennsylvania Conservation Agency has recently collected a sample of West Nile-positive mosquitoes in the Shippensburg Township.
This is the first positive WNV sample in a year in the county of the 547 adult mosquito samples collected so far.
“We are heading towards a beautiful holiday weekend that many residents celebrate, so we encourage all residents to take special care outdoors,” said John Bittner, Cumberland County Vector Controls. Said.
Residents can help prevent diseases spread by mosquitoes:
- Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
- Pay special attention around dusk, the peak of female mosquito feeding.
- Protect windows and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
- Eliminate stagnant water around your property.
- Treatment of small pieces containing non-drainable water sources, mosquito dunks, or Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) that kill larvae. These products are safe to use around humans and pets and can be found in hardware stores and other local retail stores.
Mosquitoes feed on infected birds to infect WNV and bite another bird, animal, or human to infect, Bitner said.
The county’s WNV program applies an integrated pest management plan to control mosquitoes and limit their impact on humans and the environment. Vector Control continues to collect and monitor mosquito populations and actively treats water habitats to limit future generations of mosquitoes.
The virus does not spread from person to person. One in five people infected with WNV develops a mild infection called West Nile Fever. Pain, fever, skin rash, and swollen lymph nodes are symptoms of this infection. With rest and hydration, most people recover within a few days.
Less than 1% of infections cause life-threatening West Nile encephalitis. Severe symptoms include high fever, headache, stiff neck, weakness, disorientation, tremor and convulsions. This infection needs immediate treatment.
