Another 14 COVID-19 cases associated with Brigham and Women’s cluster
An additional 14 people connecting to the COVID-19 cluster at Brigham and Women’s Hospital were tested positive for coronavirus. In an update released on Monday, hospital officials said 30 out of 488 employees connected to a cluster tested for COVID-19, and the hospital also had 581 patients in all hospitalization areas. Tested and stated that 12 people tested positive for the virus. Twelve patients who tested positive were connected to a cluster identified by the hospital’s infection control team last Tuesday. Brigham and Women previously reported on Friday that 19 employees and 9 patients were tested positive for COVID-19. The female infection control team believes that the cluster is contained in two specific inpatient units on the Braunwald Tower 16A and 14CD. “This outbreak has not affected other areas of the hospital or outpatient clinics,” the hospital statement said. Affected areas have been thoroughly cleaned, officials said. All current Brigham and female inpatients are tested for COVID-19 every three days. This adds to the current policy of requiring all patients to be examined on admission and screened daily for symptoms. In addition, the hospital has been offering a free voluntary COVID-19 test for employees working on the main campus since September 14. M As of today, the hospital tested 4,365 employees and received 2,589 results, seven of which were positive. Two of the seven employees who tested positive are associated with a known cluster, and the other cases are not currently connected to the cluster. The exact cause of the outbreak has not yet been identified, but hospital authorities could have stated some potential factors. They included unmasked interactions with staff, inconsistent use of eye protection, patients who underwent aerosol production procedures, staff who reported working despite symptoms consistent with seasonal allergies, and Included was a lack of physical distance between staff during meals. “Our infection control team investigated the source of the cluster through intensive contact tracing, testing, and staff interviews,” wrote a hospital official. “Based on the information we currently have, the infection control team cannot determine whether the source of the cluster is a staff member or a patient.”
