The latest total of coronavirus deaths in the United Kingdom when the R number changes again
The UK’s R numbers are rising again as 47 more virus deaths have been reported in the UK.
The R-value of virus infections across the UK, or reproduction numbers, is rising, and government-advising scientists say the epidemic is “exponentially increasing.”
Estimates of R across the UK are between 1.3 and 1.6, according to data released by the Department of Government Sciences and the Emergency Science Advisory Group (Sage) on Friday.
Last week, the R number was between 1.2 and 1.5.
Weekly data from the National Bureau of Statistics for new cases shows that the numbers went down last week.
Still, Sage warns that it is too early to reach a firm conclusion, although there are some early signs that the epidemic may be slowing down.
“It is still likely that the epidemic is expanding exponentially across the country,” said a scientific adviser, who needs more data to accurately assess recent changes in coronavirus infection.
“In the coming weeks, it will be important to understand this in the UK and not be complacent,” they added.
R represents the average number of people who continue to be infected with each Covid-19 positive. Occurrences can increase exponentially when the number exceeds 1.
Earlier this year, R was thought to be just under 3 before control measures were implemented.
The National Bureau of Statistics today said there were about 1.54 new Covid-19 infections per 10,000 people per day in the UK community population in the last week (September 18-24).
This represents about 8,400 new cases per day. This is below the previous week’s estimate of 9,600 cases per day.

ONS said: “There is uncertainty about the incidence in England over the most recent period. There is limited evidence that the incidence could level off following the sharp increases in August and September, but the confidence interval. It’s too early to say that is wide. “
