Illinois reports Chicago-based death from the first West Nile virus of the year
A Chicago Resident died of mosquito-borne infection West Nile virus.. Illinois health officials announced this week that the death was the first death in the state this year related to the West Nile virus.
Illinois Public Health Service (IDPH) officials said in a news release that unidentified residents first became ill in mid-September and subsequently tested positive for the disease.
“We’re already in the fall, but the West Nile virus is at risk until the first heavy frost,” said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of IDPH, in a statement. “It is important that everyone continues to take precautions, such as using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and staying indoors from dusk to dawn.”
West Nile virus, First reported In the United States in 1999, it is usually prevalent by infected mosquitoes. Side effects can be severe, but most infected people experience little or no symptoms and recover completely.
A percentage of people infected with the Westnile virus (about 1 in 5) have a fever and may also experience side effects such as headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. More rarely, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 150 people infected with mosquito-related illnesses can develop serious illnesses such as inflammation of the spinal cord and brain.
