Coronavirus outbreak in Harbor View infects four patients and kills one
Seattle, WA — A coronavirus outbreak in the Surgical Treatment Unit at Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle has infected 10 healthcare professionals and 4 patients. One of them died of illness.
Dr. John Lynch, director of the Harborview Infection Control Program, said the deceased patient had “many comorbidities” and was taken to the intensive care unit. Three of the patients had been in Harbor View for more than two weeks, so it’s likely they were infected in the hospital, Lynch said. According to Lynch, Harborview identified the first illness associated with the outbreak in early October and urged authorities to close the unit for a new hospitalization and examine all patients and staff. The unit is for non-intensive care and is where patients are often treated before and after surgery.
Hospital leaders are still deciding how the virus has invaded the facility.
