Two Residents of NH Veterans Home Died COVID-19 | Coronavirus
Two residents of the Tilton — New Hampshire Veterans Home died of COVID-19, infecting 19 other residents and 17 staff.
Commander Margaret Labreck said on Wednesday when the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed, “I was very fortunate to be able to achieve it from March to November 10.”
“We continue to be grateful, but unfortunately we had a small hot cluster last Tuesday and immediately did a COVID test and quarantined them.”
On Friday, the New Hampshire National Guard tested all patients and staff at home and detected the infection in both groups, she said.
The next day, La Brecque said “one of our very old residents” died of COVID-19. A second resident died on Monday.
“It’s very difficult for the staff because we mourn their loss and love them like a family,” she said, and death is even more because the veterans’ homes are closed to visitors. It was tragic. Residents and their families are not together with each other.
Founded in 1890, the Veterans’ House can accommodate 250 inhabitants, but currently only 136, 62 to 102 years old.
Veterans’ homes began in 2020 with 180 inhabitants, but their numbers have declined due to the natural “living process”, says La Brecque, now COVID-19.
From March to May, the Veterans Home did not accept new residents, but reopened in June. After last week’s positive COVID-19 test, the Veterans Home resumed suspension of hospitalization.
La Brecque, commander since 2012, said there were “significant vacancies” for what should be 280 staff.
Some of these vacancies exist due to concerns among healthcare professionals about working where COVID-19 cases have been reported.
LaBrecque said Governor Chris Sununu and a delegation of the state legislature did a lot to help the veterans’ home.
