County-identified L452R Covid-19 variant
The L452R coronavirus variant was detected in Monterey County as a result of a genome sequencing survey by the California Public Health Service, county officials said this week.
The L452R variant, also known as the “California variant” because of its role in recent outbreaks, differs from the B.1.1.7 variant that was first detected in the United Kingdom. The L452R variant was first discovered in Denmark last year and has been confirmed in other states.
To date, this variant has been identified in at least 12 counties throughout the state, including San Francisco and Santa Clara counties.
A variant of L452R has also appeared more frequently in the state since November, according to the Monterey County Health Department.
“The clinical and epidemiological significance of this strain is unknown and is under investigation,” said Dr. Edward Moreno, Health Officer and Director of Public Health in Monterey County. “It is also of concern that this case represents the first local evidence of infection, recovery, and recurrent infection.”
State and local health officials say that mutations in the original SARS-CoV-2 virus that cause COVID-19 are more likely to spread the virus community rather than mutating the virus in response to therapeutic agents or vaccines. It states that it shows well.
The state’s Secretary of Health and Welfare, Dr. Mark Garry, said in a briefing Tuesday that the virus variation underscores the continued threat of the virus as the vaccine is being rolled out throughout the state.
