Russia reports to WHO the first case of human infection with AH5N8 bird flu
Moscow (Reuters)-Russia has registered the first case of avian influenza virus strain AH5N8 infecting humans from birds and reported it to Anna Popova, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) consumer health monitoring agency Rospotrebnadzor. I said on Saturday.
Russia reported the incident to WHO “a few days ago, as if we were completely convinced of the outcome,” Popova told Rossiya 24 State Television.
So far, she added, there were no signs of human transmission.
Previously, another strain of bird flu, H5N1, was known to spread to humans.
Seven workers at a poultry farm in southern Russia said they were infected with the AH5N8 strain when it broke out at the poultry farm in December, adding that they are now fine.
“This situation didn’t progress any further,” Popova said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
