Minneapolis (AP) — Health officials in Minnesota reported daily records of COVID-19 vaccination on Sunday, with nearly 70,000 new doses administered on the final day.
After about 56,000 vaccinations on Saturday, new high vaccinations were recorded for the second consecutive day. The state has been working to catch up with doses after supply delays due to bad weather across the country.
Over 47,000 of the newly reported vaccinations were first doses.
Minnesota has averaged more than 34,000 daily vaccinations in the past week, the highest number since vaccinations began in December. At that pace, about 80 percent of the state’s inhabitants could be shot by August, Minnesota Public Radio News reported.
Vaccination should continue to increase with the newly approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine arriving in the state next week. The J & J vaccine requires only one vaccination.
On Sunday, state health officials reported 813 new COVID-19 cases, along with eight new deaths from the coronavirus. With this update, the number of positive tests has increased to 484,594 and the number of deaths has increased to 6,483 since the start of the pandemic.
