Boy dies at COVID-19 after family travels to Hawaii
Honolulu (AP) — A child who traveled to Hawaii with vaccinated parents died after being infected with COVID-19.
The Hawaii Department of Health said on Tuesday that the boy was under the age of 11 and had a known underlying illness.
This is the first time a child of that age group died in Hawaii in connection with a coronavirus.
The state has reported 479 deaths associated with COVID-19.
Brooks Veil, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said the child began to show symptoms shortly after arriving in the state and was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The child’s parents were completely vaccinated and tested for COVID-19 before traveling to Hawaii.
“You can see that your parents have been tested and both are negative, which indicates that this child is not infected with COVID from their parents.”
People traveling to Hawaii can use a negative coronavirus test to be exempt from the state’s 10-day quarantine rules for incoming travelers. Children under the age of 5 do not need to be tested prior to arrival. Baehr did not know if the child was tested.
