New COVID-19 case and another variant of PEI

Charlottetown-Prince Edward Island health officials today report a new case of COVID-19.

Dr. Heather Morrison, Chief Medical Officer of Health, says a recent case involves a person in his fifties who traveled outside the Atlantic coast of Canada.

Currently, there are seven active cases of COVID-19 in the state.

Further analysis revealed that the two recent cases of PEI were the first subspecies of interest detected in India, Morrison said.

She also says the island had 15 cases of the first reported B.1.1.7 mutant in the United Kingdom.

Despite the relatively small number of COVID-19 cases at PEI, Morrison called for continued attention last week, pointing out that there were 900 new cases in Atlantic, Canada.
