Blockade “Postpartum depression rate doubles”
Dr. Saray Myers of the UCL Faculty of Anthropology said: “Especially in a crisis where everyone is dealing with increasing demand, stress and critical life events, we need a village to raise children.
“Our research shows that blockades make new mothers more susceptible to postpartum depression, and digital solutions may help, but that’s not the answer.
“Policymakers will continue to deal with Covid-19 for moms, babies, and the whole family, so this must be taken into account.”
Research found that many mothers felt that the blockade created a “continuous mother’s burden” that no one around them helped.
Virtual contacts in the form of phone calls and Zoom provided some help, but often couldn’t see the support network struggling and women had to actively seek help. It wasn’t enough.
Dr. Emily Emot, who was also involved in the research, said: “A new mother with multiple children was hit hardest and was left to deal with newborns in addition to multiple demands like homeschooling.
“First-time mothers often feel fooled by the precious time they spend with their babies, family and friends, and agree with the changes in identity and isolation that new mothers often feel.”
“But where the blockade allows partners to stay home more, share relentless work and household chores, and take care of existing children, the new mother has benefited.
“It helped everyone build closer relationships, and some reported that the family generally benefited from spending this time together.”
