Smoking is likely to have killed more than Covid last year
Smoking probably killed more people than Covid at the same time, putting a serious burden on hospital services, according to Professor Chris Whitti.
In a talk about the future of health trends, the Chief Medical Officer said “a few businesses” are killing people for profit.
Professor Whitty said the fight against lung cancer has made little progress and about 90,000 people die each year from smoking-related illnesses. This is more than a pandemic. He said most of those deaths were avoided.
At Gresham College in London, he said: “Lung cancer is currently the largest cancer murderer in the UK. It kills one in five people.
“The reason people like me are so worried and upset about this cancer is that it’s caused almost entirely for profit.
