The Met Office said the hottest day of the year will see temperatures reaching -2 degrees Celsius in parts of England.

Many people enjoyed a warm and sunny Saturday, but forecasters say temperatures will drop as the work week begins.

People were photographed sunbathing on parks and beaches across the UK as temperatures soared well above the national average of 13-14C.

The highest temperature in the UK in 2024 was 21.8C, recorded in Writtle, Essex, on Saturday.

Scotland also recorded well above normal temperatures of 10C in April, with temperatures reaching 16.7C in eastern Aberdeenshire.

However, on Saturday night temperatures could reach minus 2 to minus 3 degrees in rural Scotland and remain in the low figure further south, the Met Office predicted.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said Sunday would be a chilly start to the day for all, but with a dry morning and plenty of sunshine.

On Sunday, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 14-15°C in south-east England and 10-12°C in the north.

Temperatures are expected to continue to fall throughout the week and not exceed April averages.

Glaisyer said low pressure was settling in towards the north of England and would slowly sink south over the remainder of the weekend, bringing in cooler north-westerly winds until the start of the week.

Snow could also fall in the highlands of northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday, with showers expected across the board, forecasters said.

Hail and thunder could lash parts of Wales and northern England.

Temperatures in the south that day will likely only be around 11 to 13 degrees, and double that will be difficult to reach in the north, Glaisyer said.

She added: The start of the weekend is a bit dry, but that won't last too long as showers arrive soon.
