UK immigration strategy increases risk of exploitation, says charity | Immigration & Asylum

Dozens of charities have warned that as governments ramp up their crackdowns on illegal immigrants, detaining and deporting them, more and more people are being forced into hiding and are at greater risk of exploitation.

In a letter coordinated by Migrant Voice on Friday, more than 80 organisations including Care4Calais, City of Sanctuary UK, Anti-Slavery International, Doctors of the World UK and Safe Passage International called on the Home Secretary to make it easier for illegal immigrants to regularise their immigration status so they can work with less risk of falling victim to exploitative employers and people-trafficking rings.

On August 27, the Ministry of the Interior announced that it had conducted a week-long intensive operation against illegal labor, targeting 275 workplaces, of which 135 were notified that they employed illegal workers.

The government said it was seeking to protect vulnerable workers from exploitation by dishonest employers, but the operation resulted in the detention of 85 illegal workers.

While this operation has made significant progress, our commitment to tackling this issue remains intact, and the Home Secretary said those who break the rules will be held to the full extent of the law.

The government deported more than 200 people to Brazil this month, the largest single deportation on record. There have been at least nine deportation flights since the Workers' Party came to power.

Najek Ramadan, director of Migrant Voice, said: Immigration crackdowns and deportations do not address the fundamental problem that most people who end up in the UK illegally do so through no fault of their own.

People who have lived in the UK for decades can lose their status overnight due to issues such as paperwork errors or poor communication from the Home Office.

Instead of punishing illegal immigrants, this government should take a new approach and create a simpler path for them to regain legal status.

Many illegal immigrants have been living in the UK for years or even decades, building lives and families here. The letter says a regularisation policy would be less costly than a detention and deportation policy and would boost economic growth by increasing the number of people already in the UK, allowing them to contribute more to the economy.

Ramadan added: People don't feel safe. The raids are very traumatic for them. People who are already vulnerable are becoming more vulnerable and are going underground. We are seeing more and more raids on businesses and homes.
