A strain of mpox disease that had not previously been detected in the United States has been discovered in California, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The California Department of Health confirmed the case through laboratory testing. The patient contracted it after traveling from East Africa, where there was an outbreak of the clade I strain. The person was treated in San Mateo County and later released. The person is at home recovering, the CDC said Saturday.

The CDC says the strain poses a low risk to the general public. “Casual contact, such as you might have while traveling, is unlikely to present significant risks of mpox transmission,” it says.

The agency advises people to avoid close contact with infected people as well as surfaces and objects they may have come into contact with, such as clothing, bedding and toothbrushes. Those who are eligible should also be vaccinated, it says.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern.

It is a zoonotic or animal-caused disease; and endemic, or regularly present, in central and western Africa. It was previously known as monkeypox but was shortened by the WHO, with critics saying the name fuels racist stereotypes and prematurely suggests monkeys are the primary carriers of the disease.

There are two types of mpox, clade I and clade II. They cannot be distinguished by their appearance, but clade I diagnoses are generally more fatal and more serious. However, its effects have been less severe in the current clade I outbreak in central and eastern Africa, according to the CDC.

Mpox causes a rash that may appear on the hands, feet, chest, face, or genitals. Symptoms may take 3 to 17 days to appear.
