UK’s largest Gigafactory receives £380 million in funding to produce electric vehicle batteries

The UK’s largest gigafactory has received £380 million in government support for the car industry.

The Advanced Propulsion Center UK (APC) has confirmed its latest round of government funding totaling £470 million for a range of projects under the DRIVE35 programme.

Agratas, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s parent company Tata Group, will receive “significant” government support worth around £380 million.

The company is currently developing its Bridgwater site in Somerset with plans to begin battery production next year.

Funding is provided by the Department of Commerce’s DRIVE35 Automotive Innovation Fund (ATF), supported by APC.

Experts have previously urged the government to revitalize the sector and promote electric vehicle battery production through additional funding.

Julian Hetherington, APC’s director of automotive innovation, praised the additional funding, which has helped to further develop the sector.

He said: “This globally significant investment from Agratas strengthens the UK’s accelerated position in pursuing road transport decarbonisation through the production of essential high-performance batteries for electric vehicles.”

The gigafactory will initially produce batteries for Tata-owned Range Rover, Land Rover Defender and Jaguar models.

Agratas is almost finished covering the building with insulation so the team can fit equipment inside.

It was recently confirmed that it is preparing for an ‘imminent launch’ on the ring road near the Gigafactory and that around 1,600 jobs will be created as part of this process.

This requires the team to build roundabouts, culverts, drainage systems, street furniture, signage, lighting and landscaping.

Tom Flack, CEO of Agratas, said the company’s initial £4 billion investment in the Bridgwater site “will help accelerate the UK’s electric mobility transition”.

Mr Flack added: “We care deeply about the communities in which we operate, so when we build a factory in Somerset it is essential that we work with and listen to our new neighbors.”

A further £84 million of government funding will be invested, with car manufacturers JLR, ELM Mobility, Maeving and Nissan joining forces.
