A lesser-known Welsh attraction has made the list of the UK’s best museums.

A small museum in Wales has received national recognition after being named the best museum in the UK by a leading art critic.

The Radnorshire Museum in Llandrindod Wells has been named one of Britain’s ‘9 best museums’ by The Times’ chief art critic Laura Freeman.

Located in the heart of the village, the Radnorshire Museum displays a variety of historical artefacts that tell the story of the historic county of Radnorshire, from its ancient settlements to its modern origins as a tourist destination.

Housed in the old Carnegie Library and free to enter, it houses a diverse collection of archeology, natural history, geology, social history, and art, as well as a large collection of photographs from the Victorian era to the present.

Freeman wrote of the Radnorshire Museum: “I would never have discovered this gem of a local museum if I hadn’t rented a vacation home nearby for two summers in a row.

“It’s not extravagantly done, and could definitely use a coat of paint, but it’s a perfect example of a small museum that did a lot with what they had.

“Taking an ‘old curiosity shop’ approach, the Radnorshire Museum displays items including Victorian poison bottles, vintage crisp packets, ivory bobbins and hand-clad workers’ tunics.

“The nearby church of St Anno on the banks of the River Ithon has a really nice rood screen. Very well worth the detour.”

The recognition places the Powys landmark alongside some of the country’s most renowned museums, including the V&A in London and Jupiter Artland in Edinburgh.

According to Powys County Council, Radnorshire Museum’s inclusion in The Times rankings highlights the region’s unique offer and cultural significance.
