Britain’s ‘anxious generation’ having difficulty adapting to work | young people

An ‘anxious generation’ of young people are struggling to adapt to the old world of work, according to a government jobs adviser.

Former Labor and Health Secretary Alan Milburn said in a report this week that businesses must adapt by offering more flexibility and mental health support to young people to avoid “economic disaster”.

Last November, Milburn, who held various government positions under Tony Blair, was asked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer to investigate why around one million 16-24 year olds – one in eight – are not in education, employment or training.

His interim report on the group, known as Neets, is due to be published next week. According to The Times, “Mental illness, anxiety and depression are on the rise. [and] “Neurodiversity” is a key factor contributing to high economic inactivity among young people.

The review is also expected to address the growing influence of social media on young people’s mental health. Milburn argued that young people’s brains have been “rewired” by smartphones.

Milburn told the Times: “Rather than putting people to work, the system is locking them into unemployment. “We are at risk of wiping out an entire generation.

“This is the bedroom generation. They sort of live in their bedrooms. They’re always on and never off. [Social media] This leads to some evidence of impaired functioning, changes in sleep patterns and concentration levels. This affects your ability to work.

“They are not snowflakes. People say they are a soft generation. My view is clearly not that. They are an anxious generation.”

More than half of the UK’s 946,000 NEETs have never worked and a quarter are classified as unable to work due to a long-term illness or disability. Of these, 43% said mental health problems were the main reason they were unable to work. This is an increase from 24% in 2011.

The government announced last year that the proportion of NEETs in the UK was significantly higher than that of other developed countries.

The population of Nitz is approximately twice that of Japan or Ireland, and three times that of the Netherlands. Unemployment among those under 23 is still associated with low wages, even after 20 years.

Milburn’s report states:[Young people] No different, no worse, no lazier, no less smart. They have grown up in a digital world that has changed the way we communicate, form relationships, and manage stress. “They have less work experience and higher levels of anxiety and depression.”

Milburn is expected to argue that Nitz could offer a solution to British businesses struggling to find skilled labor amid falling immigration. Net migration to the UK fell to 171,000 last year, compared with a peak of 891,000 in 2022, according to figures released on Thursday.

In an interview with the Guardian earlier this week, Peter Hyman, a former headteacher and adviser to both Blair and Starmer, said schools were becoming ‘pipelines’ for unemployment and called on the government to enact radical changes, including a ban on social media.
