GCC trade deal protects UK food standards – NFU Cymru

NFU Cymru has been working extensively with ministers and UK negotiators on a potential deal with the GCC since 2021.

The NFU has written to the Prime Minister, written to the Secretary of State for Commerce and Industry, and met with the Secretary of State for Trade to urge them to secure food production standards.

The UK Government has kept its commitment not to compromise the UK’s high animal welfare standards by maintaining current tariff levels on UK imports of chicken, eggs and pork.

UK farmers will also benefit from the deal through increased export opportunities. There is high demand for lamb, dairy and oats in GCC countries, and removing the 5% tariff on these products in the UK will help boost exports and build domestic agricultural business resilience.

‘The government listened to our concerns’

Commenting on the news of the UK-GCC trade deal, NFU Cymru president Abi Reader said: “Trade deals agreed in recent years have been a mixed bag, with limited benefits for UK farming businesses, but we are really pleased that the government has listened to our concerns and enabled us to capitalize on the strong demand in the GCC for products produced in Wales, such as lamb, cheese and butter oats. This will secure greater access to high quality Welsh UK products and protect pork, chicken and oats. Egg section.

“The most dangerous part of this deal has been around animal welfare standards in GCC countries, which are often lower than ours. It will be a relief to Welsh farmers and the public that the UK Government has stood firm in its commitment to protecting the UK’s high food production standards.”

But Abi went on to highlight that concerns remain about other ongoing trade negotiations and reiterated the need for the UK government to develop a core set of production standards that all imports must meet.

She said: “This was a well-negotiated deal, but we have no illusions that other countries that may not meet our standards will work hard for greater access to our markets. This is a real concern for both farmers and the public, who rightly believe that their food should be produced with animal welfare and environmental protection at its core.”
