GPS caught on RAF jet carrying British defense secretary near Russian border | Russia

A Royal Air Force jet carrying Defense Secretary John Healey flew near the Russian border after its signals were disrupted throughout the three-hour flight.

Healy was returning to the UK from a visit to British troops in Estonia when the electronic attack occurred, the Times reported.

Russia is thought to be behind Thursday’s incident.

Smartphones and laptops could not connect to the internet, and the plane’s GPS was disabled, forcing the pilot to use a different navigation system.

It is unclear whether the Healey was intentionally targeted, but its flight path was plotted on an aircraft tracking website.

Passengers, including photographers and journalists, were told that the Dassault Falcon 900LX aircraft was still safe to operate.

Healy met with Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur in Tallinn and discussed long-term bilateral defense cooperation and strategic expansion.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Wednesday said two Russian jets had “repeatedly and dangerously” intercepted a Royal Air Force reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea last month.

A Russian Su-35 jet flew too close to a British reconnaissance aircraft, activating its emergency systems, including disabling its autopilot.

The Russian Su-27 also flew six meters from the nose of its unarmored riveted joint and made six passes forward.

The MoD said this was Russia’s most dangerous action against a British riveted joint aircraft since one plane fired a missile over the Black Sea in 2022.

The Rivet Joint is a reconnaissance aircraft with a crew of up to 30 people, capable of extensive electronic surveillance with a range of approximately 150 miles, and has been monitoring Russian activities as part of NATO patrols.

In March 2024, an RAF plane carrying then Defense Secretary Grant Shapps was flying near Russian territory when its GPS signal was disrupted.

Satellite signals were disrupted for about 30 minutes while the plane was returning from Poland to the UK.

Last month, Healey said Britain had set sail after tracking three Russian submarines that had wandered over vital undersea infrastructure in the North Atlantic for a month.

“I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding professionalism and courage of the RAF aircrew who continued to carry out their mission despite these dangerous actions,” he said.

“Let me be clear: this incident will not disrupt the UK’s commitment to defend NATO, our allies and our interests against Russian aggression.”
