President Trump says US, Iran close to agreement to end warExBulletin

President Donald Trump announced on social media Saturday afternoon that a deal to end the war with Iran “will be announced” shortly.

ADRIAN FLORIDO, HOST:

In a social media post today, President Trump said the United States and Iran have largely negotiated a deal to end the war. This comes as the possibility of further US strikes against Iran looms and many questions remain about the eventual deal and the fate of the conflict. We’re joined by NPR national security correspondent Greg Myre. Hi, Greg.

GREG MYRE, BYLINE: Hi, Adrian.

FLORIDO: Can you tell us more, Greg, about the content of Trump’s statement?

MYRE: Yeah, he went to Truth Social recently and he said he was in the Oval Office. He said he had very good calls with several Middle Eastern leaders. These include the Gulf countries and several other countries in the region. He said he also had a conversation with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, all related to a memorandum of understanding relating to peace in the Iran war. According to him, an agreement was, I quote, “extensively negotiated, subject to being finalized between the United States of America, Iran and other countries.”

Today, he added, the final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed. So clearly it’s not accurate. It hasn’t been approved by everyone and we don’t know much about its contents. He certainly announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but there was no mention of the Iranian nuclear program. And obviously, that was one of the key things that President Trump demanded.

FLORIDO: Any agreement to end the war would be considerable progress. But what do we hear from Iran?

MYRE: Yes, so we heard earlier today from a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, who also gave a somewhat similar assessment, saying that the United States and Iran were in the final stages, again, of what he called a memorandum of understanding. And he said, I quote, “the positions of the two parties are getting closer.”

Once again, I want to emphasize that there appears to be progress. They’re close, but they haven’t figured it out yet. And that’s more like a framework, something to keep the ceasefire in place, maybe open the Strait of Hormuz, ease tensions without settling all the other issues, including, again, things like Iran’s nuclear program.

FLORIDO: And so, is it really clear, Greg, whether this deal – this potential deal would be an extension of the ceasefire or an actual total end to the war?

MYRE: Yes, Adrian, it’s really not clear at this preliminary stage when in fact the agreement has not even been fully accepted or signed.

FLORIDA: Of course.

MYRE: But it seems like we are definitely talking about an extension of the ceasefire. A key factor would be the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Once again, the nuclear deal and the nuclear program still appear to be on the table. So it doesn’t look like we’ve resolved the remaining issues. And we know that President Trump has wanted a nuclear deal to be part of any agreement ending the war, while Iran is talking about ending the war first and then postponing nuclear negotiations until later.

FLORIDO: Besides nuclear negotiations, what other issues should be addressed, Greg?

MYRE: Yes, Iran has raised a number of things. They say they want relief from sanctions, those that the United States and other Western countries have imposed on the country for a long time. They want reparations for the war, for all the damage inflicted by American and Israeli bombings. And they also said that they wanted to talk not only about the opening of the Strait of Hormuz…

FLORIDA: OK.

MYRE: …But make arrangements for the future on how this will be handled in the future.

FLORIDO: This is NPR’s Greg Myre. Thank you for joining us.

MYRE: Of course, Adrian.
