As many of us return to the office after the Bank Holiday, you may have been wondering what to wear to stay cool in the warm weather.

Personal stylist Sian Clarke, known as Styled by Sian, says people should consider two things when deciding whether it’s appropriate to wear shorts at work. That is, how important comfort is to you and whether you are someone who easily overheats.

Sian told the BBC: “From an emotional and comfort standpoint, I would fully support that.”

But in more traditional workplaces where they don’t want to “raise eyebrows” or risk being asked to change, employees may want to stick to a dress code, Sian says.

“It depends on the person and where they work, but I think it’s a really modern approach.”

According to workplace mediation service Acas, under the law employers have a “duty of care” to ensure employees’ working temperatures are reasonable.

While employers are not required to relax their dress codes in hot weather, “where possible, it may be advisable for employers to relax their rules on wearing ties or suits,” Acas says.

If you want to stay cool at work without wearing shorts, Sian recommends choosing natural fibers and loose fit clothes, including organic materials that are more breathable.
