Iran has refuted suggestions that a deal with the United States is imminent, pointing to confusion in American positions and Israeli interference as reasons why a deal is proving difficult to achieve.

Speaking at the Foreign Ministry’s weekly press conference, Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian negotiating team, also said that the future management of the Strait of Hormuz was an issue that Oman and Iran needed to agree on, and that it was not tolls that were being proposed but “charges for navigation services.”

Referring to the state of the negotiations, Baghaei said: “It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large part of the issues under discussion. But to say that this means that the signing of an agreement is imminent – no one can make such a statement.”

He also insisted that a ceasefire in Lebanon must be included in the memorandum of understanding that would allow Iran to allow commercial shipping through the strait and the United States to lift the blockade of Iranian ports.

In contrast, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a deal was still possible, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would be open “one way or another.”

“There were discussions in Qatar today, so we’ll see if we can make progress. I think there’s a lot of discussion on specific terms in the initial document,” Rubio told reporters in Jaipur during an official visit to India.

US President Donald Trump said in an article on Truth Social on Monday that the deal would be “great and meaningful, or there would be no deal at all.”
