The UK continues to experience heat wave conditions, with thunderstorms expected in places after a weekend of unprecedentedly hot temperatures.

The record for the lowest temperature in May was broken for the third day in a row on Tuesday.

Britain also recorded its provisional hottest spring weather on record, with Kew Gardens, south-west London, breaking its previous record on Monday to hit 35C.

A yellow weather warning was also issued for parts of England on Tuesday evening as thunderstorms were expected following record-breaking heat waves.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for the South West, Midlands, North West England, Yorkshire and the Humber. The warning goes into effect at 3pm and runs until 10pm on Tuesday.

Forecasters said train and bus service delays or some cancellations were likely in areas affected by the storm.

Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page said: “Unprecedented late spring heat will continue throughout this week.”

“Last night was provisionally the warmest May night on record and we are likely to see more very warm nights in the south over the next few days. Tonight, southern England and Wales are likely to experience a ‘tropical night’ with temperatures not falling below 20°C.

“While it will remain dry and clear for many places, the heat and humidity mean a few isolated thunderstorms are more likely to develop later today, particularly over parts of the UK. Looking ahead, the focus of maximum temperatures will shift west on Wednesday, with northern areas feeling warmer on Thursday.

“Temperatures will ease slightly later in the week, but we will still see a gradual change to above average,” he said.

A heatwave has been officially declared in eight regions of south-east England, with temperatures reaching 27C for the third day in a row.

Yellow heat warnings are in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London and the South East.

Officials have warned that hot weather could have serious impacts across health and social care services.

How long is the heat wave expected to last?

The Meteorological Administration said the heat will continue throughout this week, rising to 25 degrees on Wednesday, 29 degrees on Thursday, 25 degrees on Friday, and 25 degrees on Saturday.

Here’s what the Met Office predicts for the next few days.

wednesday

In sunny weather, it is mostly dry. There are more clouds in the northeast, with bright clouds developing. Perhaps there will be some strange showers in the west. It’s very warm in the southwest, but feels cooler elsewhere.

Thursday to Saturday

Heat will remain across parts of the South over the next few days. There is a risk of occasional thundershowers, but it is generally dry.
