Outbreaks being monitored: Week 21 (week ending May 24, 2026)

On May 15, 2026, an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. On May 16, 2026, the Director-General of WHO determined that this outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

As of May 26, 2026, 1,198 cases of Bundibugyo virus (including 1,077 suspected and 121 confirmed) and 263 deaths (246 suspected and 17 confirmed) have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Confirmed cases were reported in Ituri (110 cases), North Kivu (10 cases) and South Kivu (1 case) provinces.

In Uganda, seven confirmed cases (including one death) have been reported as of May 27, 2026. This is an increase of five confirmed cases since the last report. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the five new cases have clear links to the two initially identified cases.

On May 22, 2026, the Charite University Hospital in Berlin reported that a U.S. citizen medically evacuated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Ebola disease tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus in a confirmatory test. The case is being observed and treated in a highly secure area of the hospital’s specialized isolation room. The patient’s wife and children, classified as high-risk contacts, are currently asymptomatic and are being quarantined in a separate area of the unit. Initial Ebola PCR tests for the family were negative.

WHO has been supporting the deployment of rapid response teams, delivery of medical supplies, and strengthening surveillance to control the spread of the outbreak. Other response activities include assessing infection prevention and control, establishing safe treatment centers, and community engagement.

On 21 May 2026, the UK announced that it had allocated up to £20 million in new aid funding to respond to the outbreak.

This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976, with the last reported outbreak ending in December 2025 in Kasai Province. Bundibugyo virus was first identified in 2007 in the Bundibugyo district of western Uganda. A second outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus was reported in DRC in 2012.

As of 27 May 2026, no imported cases related to this outbreak have been reported in the UK. Previously in 2015, imported cases of Ebola virus disease were reported in the UK in connection with the West African outbreak of 2014-2016.

WHO assesses the risk of this event as low at the global level, high at the regional level, and very high at the national level. The current risk of Ebola to the UK population is assessed to be low.
