US says it can resume war with Iran as deal remains elusive

The United States has indicated it is “more than capable” of resuming war with Iran if necessary, while the fate of a possible deal between Washington and Tehran remains up in the air.

“We are more than capable, our stockpiles are more than adequate for this, both there and around the world, because of the way we balance exquisite and more abundant munitions,” US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a major defense summit in Asia on Saturday.

“We are in a very good position,” he added.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) echoed this position on X, saying that U.S. forces “remain present and vigilant throughout the region.”

U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative framework agreement Thursday to extend Iran’s war ceasefire by 60 days and launch negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program toward a final deal.

The proposal must still be approved by US President Donald Trump, who said he was looking to make his “final decision” on the deal at an upcoming meeting.

“Iran must accept that it will never have a nuclear weapon or bomb. The Strait of Hormuz must be immediately opened, toll-free, for unrestricted maritime traffic, in both directions. All water mines (bombs), if any, will be removed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump met with his advisers for two hours in the White House Situation Room on Friday, but the meeting ended without a decision, according to a senior administration official.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Trump would only sign a deal that respected his red lines, including a guarantee that Tehran would never be able to develop nuclear weapons.

Before the meeting ended, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told state media that no deal had yet been finalized. He added that negotiators were primarily focused on ending the war and were not currently discussing details of Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s nuclear program remains a major sticking point in the negotiations. Tehran has repeatedly opposed the requirement, saying its nuclear activities are only for peaceful and civil purposes.

Iran’s top negotiators also expressed a lack of confidence “in guarantees or words,” insisting that only actions matter, a reflection of the deep mistrust that persists between the two nations.

“No action will be taken until the other side acts,” Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X. “We do not obtain concessions through negotiations, but through missiles.”

Iran and the United States have accused each other of violating the ceasefire since it took effect about seven weeks ago. Nevertheless, negotiations between the two parties continue.
