DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United States bombed Iranian radar and drone monitoring sites in Iran after Tehran shot down an American MQ-1 Predator drone over the weekend, the U.S. military said Monday. Iran acknowledged launching a retaliatory strike, while Kuwait said it was intercepting drone and missile strikes.

The dueling attacks reflect the fragility of a weeks-long ceasefire in Iran’s war, which has been the scene of repeated attacks even as U.S. and Iranian officials try to broker a deal to extend it. Meanwhile, Iran has maintained its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global energy supplies when a fifth of all oil and natural gas traded once passed through the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, fighting continues to intensify as Israel expands its occupation of Lebanon beyond the Litani River and the militant group Hezbollah continues to launch drones into Israel.

US military attacks Iran

The US military’s Central Command said it carried out strikes in Iran on Saturday and Sunday around the town of Geruk and on the island of Qeshm.

“The measured and deliberate strikes took place… in response to aggressive Iranian actions, including the shooting down of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters,” the central command said.

“US warplanes quickly responded by eliminating Iranian air defenses, a ground control station and two unidirectional attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters.”

The Predator was gradually phased out of service by the US Air Force, which now uses the MQ-9 Reaper, although the US Army still uses the Predator. The U.S. military said no U.S. soldiers were injured in the attacks.

Kuwait reports imminent shooting

Kuwait, meanwhile, said its air defenses opened fire early Monday morning to intercept drone and missile strikes. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards in a statement released by the official IRNA news agency said U.S. forces had targeted a telecommunications tower.

The Guard said it responded with an attack without specifying where, likely referring to the attack on Kuwait. The country is home to US Army Central, the Army’s forward command in the Middle East.

Iranian state television later shared footage of the ballistic missile launch, including a close-up showing a body sticker depicting the battered US President Donald Trump, superimposed on a “closed” Strait of Hormuz with the caption: “Until the last US soldier leaves the region.”

Attacks undermine ceasefire negotiations

The attacks represent the latest escalation between the United States and Iran, although both have insisted they are continuing negotiations, including over Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Over the weekend, the United States fired a missile into the engine room of a Gambian-flagged cargo ship in an attempt to break the blockade of Iranian ports.

A small number of ships have managed to exit the strait, but pressure continues on global energy supplies, as well as chemical fertilizers, raising fears of food shortages. The Gulf region produces 30% of the chemical fertilizers sold globally.

Trump met with his advisers on Friday but has not yet decided whether to move forward with a deal to extend the ceasefire and reopen the strait. Iran said the deal was not finalized.

Trump expressed optimism about the talks in a post on his Truth Social platform early Monday in Washington, mocking criticism without addressing the ongoing crossfire.

“Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good deal for the United States and those who are with us,” he wrote. “Just sit back and relax, everything will work out in the end – it always does!”
