‘Then how do you get back?’ the Lahinch bartender asked my husband as he placed a creamy black pint on the bar.

We almost finished our week-long stay here a few summers ago. We swam every day despite the rain. My mid-teens loved catching the waves in the Atlantic surf.

We were hearing disturbing stories of job losses and bankruptcies. When I visited home via Dublin Airport, the dusty cars in the short-term car park told the story of my one-way ticket abroad.

Then it was time for my daughter to start school. I said it would only be for a little while. I ordered Fallons’ junior toddler books to read at home. I encouraged her to keep saying “mala” instead of “play dough” and “runner” instead of “trainer.” We kept the kufla focus by throwing in Bainne and Leaba generously.

But she loved the small elementary school in our leafy village. So did the other two people who followed her.

As the years went by and our children became more entangled in their lives – music, sports, friendships – it became harder to think about separating them.

My career flourished and my impostor syndrome finally disappeared.

As a GP in rural Hampshire, my Irishness was embraced. No one thought it was ironic when he took over the Daily Mail and complained that holidays would cost more after Brexit.

When I complained about the local hospital staff, I responded, “I’m a foreign doctor too,” and they laughed. “Oh, you really don’t.” It gives me the impression that I am surrounded by racists and xenophobes. I’m not. Fortunately.

In fact, my patients are a big part of why I love this place. It is a privilege to witness their thoughts, aspirations and fears. I sometimes think, “Of course, why wouldn’t I feel that way?” Or, “Take your time. It’s great,” and allow a few minutes to pass while patients get to the heart of what’s bothering them.

I now have two children at university, one studying A levels and the other studying GCSEs. Living with young children leaves you with little time to sneeze, never mind make plans for the future. But over the past few years, we’ve been able to clear our heads and look around.

My children say they are Irish, but I know they don’t completely feel that way. However, they would not consider themselves entirely British. They failed Norman Tebbit’s Test cricket with aplomb every time there was an international match.

My daughter is studying in Liverpool because it is the course she wants to take. It’s pretty much what I planned. She’s in one of the most Irish cities in the world, outside of 32 counties full of GAA kits on a Saturday night.

I spent opening days in Dublin and Belfast with my 18-year-old. He knows my dream is for us all to get back together someday, but I won’t hold him back.

My sister brought me back to reality by telling me stories of contemporary children finding their feet thousands of miles from their parents. This assuages ​​the guilt of taking my kids away from what I think is the best place to raise a family.

My husband is known to be a pessimistic person. He calls it “realistic.” He recognizes that very difficult times are ahead for Britain.
