Cenk Uygur, host of the Young Turks online political talk show, and Hasan Piker, who hosts his own stream for several hours every day, have been banned from entering the UK by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. They were scheduled to speak at an event at SXSW London, a creative-led festival. Uyghur was also planning to speak at the Oxford Union on Friday.

Who are they?

Uygur, a 56-year-old activist and lawyer, is known as a left-wing populist with a large following on YouTube. He founded Young Turks, a now well-known progressive media outlet, and briefly campaigned to become the Democratic candidate for the 2024 US presidential election.

Uighur’s nephew, Piker, 34, is a Twitch streamer with more than 11 million followers across the social media platform and began campaigning with Democratic candidates this spring. His discussions of politics, foreign policy, and the failures of the American system have helped him become one of the most popular figures on the American left, especially among audiences that skew young and male.

How did it get banned?

The Home Office confirmed that the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) of the two men had been canceled because their stay in the UK “may not be in the public interest”.

Foreigners wishing to visit the UK will need permission in the form of a visa or ETA. Both can be rejected for a variety of reasons.

The rules include broad discretion for the Home Secretary to exclude individuals from the UK on the grounds that they “are not in the public interest because of their conduct, character, associations or other reasons”.

But Picker also said that anti-Semitism is “the canary in the coal mine of fascism,” and that Jews “have always been singled out by those in power as scapegoats for instability and economic volatility.” Like Uighur, he argues that a distinction must be made between opposition to Israel’s actions and anti-Semitism.
