The public has been asked to help select British wildlife to feature on a new series of banknotes.
press release
The public is being asked to give their opinion on which unique British wildlife will appear on the next series of banknotes in a consultation launched today.
The Bank of England has worked with a panel of wildlife experts from across the UK to compile a shortlist of animals that could become the central image of the £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes.
The list was divided into three categories covering a variety of species and environments. Each bill features a different animal to make it easily recognizable to the public. The shortlist is as follows:
Mammals Birds Amphibians, Insects and Fish Bottlenose Dolphin Atlantic Puffin Atlantic Salmon Brown Rabbit Barn Owl Basking Shark European Porcupine Kingfisher Kingfisher Gray Seal Eurasian Curlew Frog Pine Marten Woodpecker Emperor Dragonfly Red Fox White-tailed Eagle Marsh Fritillary Butterfly
The public will be able to select up to two cases from each category through the consultation, which runs until July 3. Only animals from the shortlist announced today could feature as the central image of the new series. We are not looking for a replacement candidate.
In July 2025, the bank announced that it would begin work on the design of its next series of banknotes, with the aim of increasing counterfeit resilience, and launched a consultation on the design topic. In March 2026, the bank announced that it had chosen nature as the theme for its next series of banknotes, with a particular focus on wildlife. Nature topics received the highest proportion of nominations from last year’s public consultation, with the majority of feedback referring to the UK’s unique wildlife. Animals are essential to our landscapes, ecosystems and daily lives, and have long inspired iconic works of art, music and literature.
Public input will be an important consideration in making final decisions on the design. Each sect should be easy to distinguish. It is important that we have four different species of animals across four sects and that they are representative of the diverse environments across the UK. The central image is complemented by additional elements of wildlife and nature.
Given this, the bank may not necessarily select the four animals with the most responses. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey will make the final decision after considering public feedback. The bank plans to announce the results of this consultation by the end of 2026.
Victoria Cleland, chief cashier at the Bank of England, said:
“We hope the public will take part in the consultation to select the animals that will feature on the next series of banknotes. The shortlisted animals demonstrate the rich and diverse diversity of wildlife we should celebrate in the UK.”
It will be several years before the next series is released. This is a detailed, multi-year process of designing, testing and printing banknotes to ensure they are high quality, resilient, accessible and incorporate the latest anti-counterfeiting technology. The next series will continue to include portraits of the monarch. Representation of the home country will also be an important feature of the design.
Since 1970, the bank has featured on its banknotes many inspirational historical figures who helped shape our nation’s thinking, innovation, leadership and values. The first of the current G series has been in circulation since 2016, when the Churchill five pound note was issued. Banknotes are regularly updated to incorporate the latest security and accessibility features.
The changes to wildlife imagery, based on public consultation and feedback, provide an opportunity to celebrate another important aspect of Britain. Selected animal images are combined with security technology to prevent counterfeiting. Animals are particularly suited to this as they offer many options featuring recognizable shapes and movements within security features.
Note to editors
1. The consultation closes at 11:59pm (BST) on Friday 3 July 2026. We are particularly seeking responses from UK residents and UK citizens living abroad. You can submit it via an online form on the bank’s website or by mail.
2. Visual assets.
3. In March 2026, the bank announced that it had chosen nature as the theme for its next series of banknotes. Not only did Nature receive the highest percentage of recommendations in last year’s consultation, it also received support in focus groups commissioned by the bank, with 60% of respondents choosing nature as one of their preferred themes. Architecture and landmarks were the second most popular at 56%. This is followed by notable historical figures at 38%, arts, culture and sports at 30%, innovation at 23% and notable milestones at 19%.
4. The bank explained that it will not include household pets as part of the option in March 2026.
5. The bank engaged a panel of wildlife experts who helped compile a final wildlife list for the public to consider. The panel consists of:
Katy Bell, Ulster Wildlife Gordon Buchanan MBE, wildlife filmmaker Miranda Krestovnikoff, wildlife presenter Steve Ormerod, Cardiff University Nadeem Perera, wildlife presenter Dawn Scott, Nottingham Trent University
6. The Bank appointed a panel of external experts based on a number of factors including: Selected by experts recognized for their expertise in British wildlife; Ensure strong connections with relevant natural organizations. We prioritize diversity across backgrounds, geographies and experiences. Utilizes individuals with a wide range of professional or academic qualifications.
7. The use of cash for transactions has declined over the past decade, but it remains the preferred payment method for around one in seven people and more people are using cash. The amount of cash in circulation also continued to increase, reaching 91.5 billion pounds as of the end of February 2026.
8. The current series of banknotes represents each country with a shield for all four denominations.
9. The first of the current banknotes (Series G) was the £5 note issued in September 2016. Subsequently, 10-pound notes were issued in September 2017, 20-pound notes in February 2020, and 50-pound notes in June 2021. The current series includes portraits of Winston Churchill (£5), Jane Austen (£10), JMW Turner (£20) and Alan Turing (£50).
10. The bank has been issuing banknotes since shortly after its founding in 1694. Since then, the bank has regularly updated the note to incorporate the latest security and accessibility features. With each redesign, the bank changed its visual image to make it easier for the public to tell the difference between the old and new notes. Until the 1920s, all of the bank’s banknotes used a single-sided, calligraphic design. Multicolored graphic design was introduced in the late 1920s. Since 1970, the bank has featured historical figures on its banknotes who helped shape our nation’s thinking, innovation, leadership and values.
