Britain is in the most dangerous time I have ever known, the Chief of Defense Staff told the BBC.

His comments come ahead of the announcement of the defense investment plan, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks after repeated delays.

The document, which outlines how new equipment and defense infrastructure would be funded over the next decade, was initially scheduled to be released in the fall of 2025.

On Friday the Prime Minister said the plan would be published “in just a few weeks” before the NATO summit.

Sir Keir Starmer said: “We have been working on our defense investment plans for some time very closely with our armed forces, as expected, because we need that interaction.”

Responding to former defense secretary Robertson’s recent criticism of the UK’s declining capabilities, and when asked whether the government would be willing to provide the military with the extra funding it said it needed, Sir Richard said he was confident ministers recognized the threat and were increasing spending.

“Exactly as the Prime Minister said, we need to spend more on defense and do it faster. The challenge for ministers is to make difficult trade-off decisions,” he said.

Sir Richard also spoke about the changing nature of war and the need for adaptation.

He said drones and autonomous systems “will become increasingly important in future warfare.”

“I am absolutely certain that this is the most dangerous period of my professional life,” he said of the threat posed to the UK.

“And the dangers and threats to this country are greater than I have known since the Cold War.

“And it’s important for society and all of us to recognize and understand that, which may mean we have to make different choices and different priorities.”

He said Russia was investigating Britain’s “traditional military defences” and other means, including cyber, sabotage and assassination attempts.

“So Russia clearly risks raising the stakes and crossing the line,” he said.

Lord Robertson warned in a shock speech in April that Britain’s security was “at risk” and Sir Keir’s government had shown a “corrosive complacency” on defence.

Lord Robertson, whose direct political involvement has now made him a key adviser to the government, warned in a speech: “We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget.”

“We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe. The national security and safety of the UK is at risk,” he said.

He added: “There is a corrosive complacency among Britain’s political leadership today.”

Downing Street said at the time: “We have set targets for defense spending, the UK defense budget is already growing at record levels and we will go further.”
