At 250 years old, 77% say American founders would be disappointed

Highlights 19% say the founders would be satisfied, compared to 54% in 2001. Since 2013, fewer of all parties say the founders would be satisfied. 69% say the United States has been at least somewhat successful in realizing its founding ideals.

WASHINGTON, DC — As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, only 19 percent of Americans say the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be happy with how the country is faring.

Just over three in four Americans (77%) now say founders would be disappointed, up from 71% in 2013 and 42% in 2001. The latest results come from a May 2026 Gallup survey.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say the founders would be satisfied (25% vs. 13%), with independents at 21%. The 2013 and 2026 numbers appear to correspond more closely than in previous years to which party holds the White House. In 2013, when Barack Obama was president, 12% of Republicans and 42% of Democrats said the founders would be satisfied. However, regardless of political identities, ratings are significantly lower than they were in 2003 and before.

Beyond political identity, opinions on founder satisfaction are largely similar across age, race, and income groups.

Seven in ten say the United States has made progress toward its founding ideals

Americans give a more positive assessment of the progress made by the country in 250 years. About seven in ten Americans say their country has had a lot (20%) or quite a bit of success (49%) in achieving the ideals on which the country was founded.

When Gallup first asked this question 50 years ago, during the country’s bicentennial year, 77 percent of respondents said the United States had achieved at least some success in achieving its founding ideals. The only other figure, from a 2002 survey conducted in the months after the September 11 terrorist attacks, was higher, at 84 percent.

Few groups argue that the United States has been very successful in achieving its founding ideals

Majorities across parties, ages and incomes say the country has succeeded at least to some extent in realizing its founding ideals. Democrats are least likely to say the United States has been very successful (10%), compared to 30% of Republicans and 20% of independents.

Age shows a similar trend. Only 8% of adults aged 18 to 34 believe the country has been very successful, compared to 23% of those aged 35 to 54 and 24% of those aged 55 or older. Yet majorities across all age groups believe the country has made at least some progress.

The differences by income are modest. Those earning less than $50,000, between $50,000 and $100,000, and $100,000 or more say the United States has succeeded in realizing its founding ideals at a similar pace. Majorities of white Americans and people of color believe the country has succeeded at least to some extent, although white Americans do so at a higher rate (74% versus 61%).

Consequences

At 250 years old, the share of Americans who think the founders would be satisfied is much lower than in the early 2000s, and these opinions are split along party, age, income, and race lines, and are not limited to any one group. At the same time, most Americans continue to say the country has made real progress toward its founding ideals, a more positive assessment that, while lower than the 84 percent in 2002 and 77 percent in 1976, has held up better than opinions about the country’s progress.

The contrast between the two suggests that Americans distinguish between the country’s long arc and its current state. They are far more likely to credit 250 years of progress toward the founding ideals than to say that the founders would be happy with the current situation. The fact that the more pessimistic view of the Founders’ likely response is also found among demographic groups indicates a discontent rooted less in partisanship than in a widely shared perception of the present moment.
