Weekend weather: How to relieve the heat?

Weekend weather: How to relieve the heat?

While extremely high temperatures and humidity continue to affect parts of the country, fresher air will begin to flow in from the west by Sunday, providing more comfortable conditions for many.

Friday: Intense heat and thunderstorms.

Very warm conditions continued across the UK on Friday. Temperatures in central and eastern regions can reach the mid-30s, with some areas reaching up to 36°C to 38°C.

This heat is accompanied by high humidity, with red heat warnings in place, especially in the southeast. The yellow warning is also extended to parts of the Midlands, northern and eastern England, reflecting the continued impact of a prolonged period of hot weather.

With the heat comes the risk of thunderstorms. Thunderous rain will move north through England and Wales during the morning, while another system will bring thunderous rain to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Localized disruption may occur if large hail and gusty winds occur, along with precipitation totaling 20 to 30 mm in a short period of time.

As you go west, the weather starts to get a little cooler. Clouds and a gentle breeze provide some relief from the intense heat in the east.

The heat will continue overnight, especially in the eastern region. In some areas, temperatures may remain above 20°C, potentially causing a return of ‘tropical nights’ where it is difficult to cool down.

There is also a chance of a few heavy rain or thunderstorms from the nearby continent to southeastern England through Saturday morning, but these are expected to dissipate fairly quickly.

Saturday: Split from northwest to southeast.

By Saturday there are clearer gaps across the UK. Northern and western regions will feel fresher with more clouds and rain, aided by refreshing winds.

In contrast, most of England and Wales, especially further south and east, will enjoy mostly dry and sunny weather. However, the possibility of isolated showers from the south remains as the heat and humidity continue.

Temperatures are lower than earlier in the week, but remain high across eastern regions, still reaching the low to mid 30s Celsius. Although the weather will be noticeably cooler elsewhere, it will still be warm for many people. An amber warning for heat waves remains in place for eastern and south-east England until 9pm.

Despite the slight drop in temperatures, a yellow heat warning remains in place for parts of eastern England due to the cumulative impact of prolonged heat waves and retention of heat in urban areas.

As we head into Sunday, a weather system begins to push east across the UK, bringing more clouds and rain. Behind this front, a more noticeable change in conditions occurs as fresher, more comfortable air spreads eastward.

Overnight temperatures will start to drop compared to earlier in the week, but eastern areas can still feel warm and muggy, with temperatures hovering around the upper teens or low 20s Celsius.

Sunday: Cooler and more variable.

Sunday morning will start out cloudy for many, with the best early sunshine in eastern England. Rain will be more persistent across Scotland and can be heavy at times, with rain gradually moving eastwards as you go south.

As the day progresses, some of this rain may be locally intense or thunderous, especially as it reaches eastern areas where warmth and moisture remain.

However, for many parts of England and Wales, the weather will become drier by the afternoon, albeit with more clouds and fresher winds.

Temperatures will be noticeably cooler than earlier in the week, but it will still be warm in the Southeast, with temperatures expected to be in the mid to upper 20s Celsius. The presence of sunlight should make you feel pleasantly warm rather than stuffy.
